How to determine the weight of a paper sheet?

Publish Date 2012-03-20
Paper Weight
The weight of a particular sheet of paper is not its actual weight, but its thickness. "Heavier" paper is thicker, while "lighter" paper is thinner. Examples of heavy paper are card stock or watercolor paper, while examples of light paper are tracing paper or newspaper. Paper is much too thin to weigh individually with complete accuracy, which is why the weight of paper is measured in carefully counted stacks.

Weight Measuring
Paper weight is the weight of 500 sheets of a particular type in pounds. During the selection process, consumers must take into account the size of the sheet as well. For example, a thinner sheet of paper measuring 10 inches by 15 inches will typically weigh more than a thick sheet of card stock measuring 3 inches by 5 inches, because a stack of 500 thinner sheets of 10-by-15 paper typically weighs more than a stack of 500 thicker sheets of 3-by-5 paper.
